New to the club? New to climbing? Start here for information on how to get started and how to get involved with the club.
Joining the Club
Joining the club is a little different this year than it has been in the past. Details are currently scarce, but it looks like membership fees will have to be paid online through the new 'Skynet' system. Full details to follow when we have them.
Essentially, you will need some kind of membership at Surrey Sports Park in order to climb. This could be a full membership (£195 for the year for students), or a sports-club membership. Hopefully the details of this will be talked about during the Fresher's Week events.
Once you have this, there is £10 to pay on top which goes to the club
Why Join the Club?
By becoming a member (paying membership) you get all the benefits of being an affiliated BMC member, and there are also some perks from the USMC itself. Please also note that non-members will NOT be able to come on club trips (an insurance thing).
- BMC membership (including free 3rd party insurance when climbing and outdoors).
- 10% off virtually every climbing/outdoors shop.
- 20% off at Peglers Outdoor Shops (www.peglers.com).
- Use of club equipment.
- This is very handy when you start climbing outside, ropes, racks and other gear can run into £1000s
- Various other wonderous things, that you'll find out about!
Learning to Climb
Never climbed before? Not a problem! Most of the people in the club had never climbed before joining. You are not alone!
During the first few weeks of term we will be running taster sessions for people to come and have a go at climbing. If past years are anything to go by, this will be a mad rush, trying to get as many people up as many routes as possible. Please bear with us, it is likely that you will only get to climb a couple of routes in the taster sessions and we won't really have much time to be teaching.
Once things have calmed down a bit, we will get started on teaching you everything you need to know, from tying knots and belaying safely to eventually learning to lead, indoors and out.
The best way to stay up to date with club happenings is by joining the forum, there is also a Facebook page though the forums are much more active.
Come to the Tuesday sessions as these are usually the busiest so you'll get to meet everyone, then definitely join us for a drink or two afterwards.
Our social secretary will also be organising pub crawls and other socials, so keep your eyes peeled.
